When Thinking Becomes Sin

Yikes! Is that really what I mean to say??? Well, yes. And now we enter the land that anti-Christians have claimed all along - Christians are all a bunch of mindless droids willing to ingest and repeat everything preached to us. They see us as automatons without the ability to think or make decisions on our own. Unfortunately, some portion of that is too true. There are those who take everything at face value without considering the source or verifying the truth.

But over analyzing everything is also bad. Especially when it comes to something that absolutely requires faith. Faith, in its very essence, defies rationalization. What if Moses stood on the shore of the Red Sea and tried to think through how to get all those people across while the Egyptians were in hot pursuit? It's just not a pretty picture. Thankfully, Moses had the presence of mind to not think it through.

Peter climbed out of the boat and onto the water without thinking at all. It wasn't until he saw the waves that he realized what he'd done. He started thinking about those waves and then got into trouble.

We are called to walk a fine line. God is not interested in robots or He would have made us robots. But over analyzing kills faith. If you have to think through how God is going to do something for you, then you missed the Faith boat. Faith will take you over the water, or through it on dry ground, and keep you from drowning. You know that quiet voice of God that you're afraid to listen to? It gets harder to hear the more you try to think for Him. If you don't think you need God's help, good luck to you, but He'll be here to help when you need Him.

I'm not saying that taking that first step on the water won't be scary. But think about how exhilarating it would be to hear God say to do "this" and you just do it and watch Him work. Then it would be easier the next time and the next time. He might change things up a bit if you start to feel cocky because the whole idea is for you to always trust Him.

Stop trying to figure out how it's going to work. If you know you're supposed to do something, then just do it. Let me know how it goes.
