Why Do We Need Superheroes?

I was poking around on Yahoo Questions and I found this interesting one:
"
Our fascination with comic superheroes is time-tested. Why do we continue to relate to them?" The best answer chosen from the public responses was, "I think it is partly because we are looking for beings that are good and more powerful than we are to protect us from the big bad guys whom we can't fight on our own."

For a society so determined to undermine the influence of religion in this country, this sounds pretty religious. And the writer agrees. Makes me wonder, if the Church was strong and functional like it should be, would Superman even exist? Why would we need a superhero to solve our problems if we already knew and relied on the greatest Superhero of all to be there for us?

This goes to a belief that I've had for a long time - that we are born with a need for God, whether we admit to it or not. I think there's a God-shaped hole in our spirit and every society has its own way of trying to fill it. Hence the variety of religions that have been around since the dawn of time. There's something inside of us that says we need more, of something. We try to fill it with science, sex, drugs, violence, fantasy, even just trying to do good things. The problem is, you can't fill a God-shaped hole with something that's not God. It will never fit and it will never feel right.

Jesus is my Super Hero. He saved my life, just like in the books, and He stands by me to protect me from the big, bad guys. Because He did that and I thanked Him for it, He gave me His cape so I could be a Super Hero too. Ok, I don't want to get off on weird theology, but He did say that I would be able to do the things that He did, and more.

Want to be a Super Hero too? Let Jesus rule your heart, then look in the mirror.
