Green Eggs and Ham was one of my two favorite books when I was little. The other one was One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. I had them memorized before I could read. I made anyone who could read sit down with me and go through page by page and tell me my favorite stories. And I always corrected them when they "got it wrong." Green eggs and ham and Sam-I-am have been part of my consciousness since I can remember, sitting in the back of my brain quietly waiting for today. Today, God and I had a laugh.
I am currently reading The G.O.D. Experiments, by Gary E. Schwartz. (If you know anyone who denies God for academic or scholarly reasons, you need to click the link and buy them this book.) Dr. Swartz, PhD, is a professor of psychology, medicine, neurology, psychiatry, and surgery and the University of Arizona. A series of events led him to seriously wonder if there really was such a thing as God. The problem was that he hated the word god. It had too many bad associations - an old white man who sent plagues and punished people. So one night he asked "the universe" if there was another name that He/It went by. Immediately, the name Sam came into his head. Sam. Dr. Swartz is nothing if not scientific, so he got out of bed and looked up the name Sam. According to Webster's unabridged second edition, Sam is short of Samuel, meaning "name of God". Dr. Swartz wanted another name for God and it turns out to be "name of God".
Very soon after reading this, I thought of my old friend who likes green eggs and ham, Sam-I-am. What was the name that God called Himself when Moses asked? I Am That I Am. So apparently, the God of the universe likes green eggs and ham!
