Loving Your Users

I was browsing some of the marketing blogs that I really like today and I found this old one from Kathy Sierra. She writes about delighting your customer - a lot. She comes from a technical/learning background so a lot of her writing is targeted straight toward software programmers, but a an awful lot can be applied to any marketing.

Her posting on How to create a non-fiction bestseller has a fundamental message -don't write to impress, write to meet a user need. Too many times writers show-off and miss getting their message to the very people they want to communicate to. Kathy's point is, get your ego out of the way and your message stands a better chance of being heard.

Made me think of a lot of Christian writers and who they are trying to impress. I confess that it's a weakness in my own armor. I hate the thought of appearing unintelligent so I probably go overboard trying to impress too much and miss the boat entirely. Getting that ego out of the way is such a good idea. If we are really working at serving God and we get out of they way, guess Who gets to shine through?

I don't know that Kathy has any religious motivation behind her message, but she sure convicted me.
